1070AM is Indianapolis’ most storied radio frequency. And it’s always been a sports leader!
From it’s inception in 1938 through 2007, WIBC called this frequency home and sports has consistently been a big part of it even as the signal’s programming format continually evolved. (1070 played various types of music to fit each passing era – Big Band in the 1940s, Rock ‘n Roll in the mid ’50s, Middle of the Road hits in the late ’70s – and eventually became an all talk format by the ’90s.) Through the years 1070-WIBC play-by-play sports included:
- The founding of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network for the Indy 500
- The founding of the Indianapolis Colts Radio Network
- Indiana Pacers in both the ABA & NBA
- IHSAA boys basketball state finals
- IU football & basketball
- Purdue football & basketball
- NASCAR’s Brickyard 400
- Indianapolis Racers hockey
- Boxing championships
In 2008 WFNI, “THE FAN”, launched an all-sports format on 1070AM; and WIBC moved to the FM dial focusing on conservative talk. In 2013 the station began simulcasting select programs on 107.5 FM, before switching in 2015 to a complete 24 hours a day, 7 days a week simulcast of 1070AM-WFNI on 93.5 FM. In 2017, WFNI “THE FAN” moved the FM simulcast frequency to 107.5.
Today, THE FAN still airs most of these premier events as well as new civic sports treasures like the IHSAA football championships and Butler Bulldogs basketball.
