When he was an intern at a small-town newspaper in South Georgia, Conrad Brunner took a mangled old lard bucket unearthed by a local farmer and turned it into an award-winning 1,500-word front-page feature. More than three decades later, Bruno is still finding stories where others don’t bother to look and producing them daily in the form of Bruno’s Blog on IndySportsCenter.com.
When it comes to covering professional sports, few have a comparable depth and breadth of experience. While living in Atlanta, Bruno covered the Falcons, Braves and Hawks. Since moving his family to Indianapolis in 1988 – Reggie Miller’s second season – to cover the Pacers for the late, great Indianapolis News, Bruno broadened his horizons by joining the Colts coverage team after the News merged with The Indianapolis Star. Along the way he won more than two dozen national, regional and state journalism awards, including four first-place finishes in the Pro Basketball Writers Association of American contest.
Sensing the shift away from newsprint and toward digital content, Bruno left the Star in 2000 to guide the Pacers’ digital operations, remaining with the franchise for 11 years before making another bold leap, this time to join 1070 the Fan as our online analyst for the Pacers and Colts. He makes frequent guest appearances on-air and also co-hosts two Saturday Showcase shows, “The Barber Shop” (with Jay Graves) and “Bruno and the Blue Mare” (with Heather Lloyd), as well as the “Colts Tailgate Show” on WIBC with Tony Katz.
A proud graduate of Georgia Southern University, where he played a small role in the re-launching of the school’s football program in the 1980s, Bruno and his wife of 34 years Jane live in Lawrence Township, not far from daughter Holly, an elementary school teacher. Son Karl, an Eagle Scout, has settled in Bloomington. Bruno also has taught journalism classes at IU and Butler, as an adjunct professor.
